Lycos, Go Get It!

Once upon a time, the Internet was a wasteland of random pages. Then, Lycos Search was born as one of the world’s first search engines, giving users the ability to find exactly what they were looking for, in seconds. Since then, the Internet has evolved into a powerful social medium, linking people all over the world and providing them with the power to be journalists, entrepreneurs and even superstars.

Here at Lycos Headquarters, we like to remember and respect our humble beginnings. In tribute, here’s a glimpse into our past. In 1997, this is what the home page of Lycos.com looked like (courtesy of the Internet Archive Wayback Machine):

Lycos has evolved with the Internet to provide not only advanced search features, but also free blogs, free e-mail, free online games, free videos and more. If you visit the Lycos.com home page today, here’s what you’ll see:

As the Internet continues to change, so will Lycos. In ten years, we have gone from “Lycos Search Engine” to “Lycos Search Engine – Mail – Games – Photo Albums – Blogs – Websites – Video - and more!” Imagine what we could do in another 10 years (I’m hoping for the ability to do my dishes with the click of a button. Maybe my laundry too.)

NEW - Lycos Classifieds

To make your online shopping experience even better, Lycos has launched Lycos Classifieds today, a search engine designed for searching online marketplaces and classifieds listings across the United States.

In addition, Lycos users will be able to post their own classifieds listings for free through this service, and have them be searchable through Lycos Classifieds as well as through Backpage.com and others.

Lycos Search - NEW Get Specific

Lycos is pleased to announce the beta release of Get Specific, a great way to narrow down what you are looking for. Just do a normal search on Lycos Search or on Lycos Advanced Search for any topic. If the topic is a broad one, not only can you "Get Specific" by adding other terms to narrow down the field of results, but Lycos will let you know what other specific related terms others are searching for. It's that easy.

To see Get Specific in action, just take a look at this search for "Trains" on Lycos. This feature is still in BETA, so you can expect additional tweaks and updates to it over the next couple of weeks.
